Esto es Auburn y Rockton. Es posible que haya conducido por esta intersección muchas veces. Quizás vivas por aquí. Quizás vengas a trabajar por aquí. Pero ahora sólo estamos caminando. Y observando lo que es. Y escuchando. Prestando atención a los detalles. Puede que haya algunos pájaros cantando. Muchos coches pasando. Quizás el autobús. Tal vez simplemente decidiste mirar de qué se trataba este letrero y ahora estás escuchando mi voz. Sea la razón que sea, ahora estás aquí.

Quizás no quisieras estar aquí. Quizás esperas el día en que saldrás de aquí. O tal vez amas este vecindario y nunca querrás irte. Quizás es aquí donde están tus familiares y amigos, y no lo cambiarías por nada. Quizás no sepas mucho sobre el barrio, como los nombres de las calles, y las formas que toman los espacios. Y tal vez nunca te hayas parado a pensar en ello. Quizás no conozcas su historia ni la de nadie que viva aquí. Pero probablemente tengas algunas ideas en este momento, cosas que hayas escuchado, cosas que puedas creer que son ciertas, y esas ideas dan forma a la manera en que ves este vecindario, vivas aquí o no. Dejemos esas ideas a un lado y simplemente caminemos.

Mira a tu alrededor. Ésta es una avenida muy transitada. Por la noche, cuando todo está en silencio, se oyen las sirenas de los vehículos de emergencia que se dirigen al hospital, que está calle arriba. Hay un autobús, pero sólo puedes verlo los domingos. Durante los días laborables, hay autobuses en Huffman o Kilburn, pero no en Rockton.

Quizás viviste aquí y te fuiste hace décadas, pero aún te acuerdas. ¿Te imaginas cómo han cambiado las cosas a lo largo de los años? ¿Puedes ver lo que solía haber aquí? El hospital fue construido en 1954. El antiguo Rockford Memorial Hospital estaba ubicado en Chestnut y Court y tenía solo 30 camas, por lo que este primer gran hospital era algo muy necesario en ese momento. En aquel entonces, esta zona eran las afueras de la ciudad. En la década de 1940, todo lo que había por aquí eran tierras de cultivo. Eso no fue hace mucho tiempo, más o menos cuando nacieron tus padres o abuelos, ¡tal vez tú! Las casas que puedes ver ahora a tu izquierda no estaban aquí en aquel entonces, sólo cultivos. Tal vez eras uno de los niños que vivían cerca en las casas alrededor de Custer y venían aquí a jugar.

Quizás todavía ames profundamente el vecindario. Te ríes al recordar que tus padres salían a ver cómo iba la construcción de West, que primero fue una escuela preparatoria, y ahora es una escuela media. La construcción fue aprobada en 1938, al mismo tiempo que la East High School, con el objetivo de reemplazar la única (hasta entonces) Rockford High School, que estaba en el centro, y cuya asistencia había crecido demasiado. West se inauguró en 1940, con un edificio en estilo Art Moderne y con una fachada exterior diseñada por Jesse Barloga. Uno de esos días tus padres vinieron a la obra, tu papá pisó un tornillo y le atravesó el pie. Entonces eras un niño y hoy todavía lo recuerdas, casi 70 años después.

This is Auburn and Rockton. You may have driven this intersection many times. Maybe you live around here. Maybe you come to work around here. But now we're just walking. And observing what is. And listening. Paying attention to details. There may be some birds chirping. Lots of cars passing by. Maybe the bus. Maybe you just decided to look at what this sign was about and now are listening to my voice. Whatever the reasons may be, you are here now. 

Maybe you wouldn’t want to be here. Maybe you long for the day that you will get out of here. Or maybe you love this neighborhood and would never want to leave. Maybe this is where your family and friends are, and would not change it for anything else. Maybe you don’t know much about the neighborhood, the names of the streets, its shapes and spaces. And maybe you have never stopped to think about it. Perhaps you do not know about its history or anyone who lives here. But you probably have some ideas right now, things that you’ve heard, some thing you may believe to be true, and those ideas shape the way you see this neighborhood, whether you live here or not. Let's set those ideas aside, and just walk.

Let’s look around. This is a busy avenue. At night, when everything else is quiet, you can hear the sirens of the emergency vehicles driving to the hospital, which is up the street. There is a bus, but you can only see it on Sundays. During weekdays, you have buses down in Huffman or Kilburn, but not in Rockton. 

Maybe you lived here and left decades ago, but still remember. Could you imagine how things have changed over the years? Can you see what used to be here? The hospital was built in 1954. The former Rockford Memorial Hospital was located on Chestnut and Court and had only 30 beds, so this first big hospital was very much needed then. Back then, this area was the outskirts of the city. In the 1940’s, everything around here was farmland. That is not so long ago, but roughly the time your parents or grandparents were born, maybe you! The houses you can see now to your left were not here then, just crops. Maybe you were one of the kids that lived nearby in the households around Custer and  would come here to play.

Maybe you still deeply love the neighborhood. You laugh when you remember that your parents would come out to see how the construction of West was going, which was first a High School, now a Middle School. Construction was approved in 1938, at the same time as East High School, with the goal of replacing the only (until then) Rockford High School, which was downtown and whose attendance had grown too large. West opened in 1940, an Art Moderne building with an exterior façade designed by Jesse Barloga. One of those days your parents came to the construction site, your dad stepped on a screw and it went through his foot. You were a child then, and you still remember, almost 70 years later.
